Fasting helped me heal my eczema faster than anything else I’ve tried in my 24 years in this world – And trust me, I have tried A LOT.
Creams & Lotions, prescription medications, steroids, avoiding certain foods and cutting out almost everything I enjoy (I am a major foodie and this SUCKED), attempting to stress-less (Which was super stressful) and taking all sorts of different baths in oils, bleach and who knows what else… :/ Gahhh, I didn’t think it would ever end and my thoughts constantly revolved around my skin. That is until I heard Don Tolman speak of the AMAZING healing benefits of fasting. With nothing else to loose I decided to take the plunge and commit to a water fast followed by a juice fast and see if I could finally, completely heal myself from my eczema, allergies and food intolerances that had come to rule almost every aspect of my life.
What is Fasting?
If you had of asked me 2 years ago if I could go even a few hours without food, I would have told you that you were INSANE. I loveeee food, probably a little too much considering I used to be 20kg heavier (more on this in another post) So the idea of fasting was still super scary and I had no idea if I could do it. BUT the thought of living with my eczema, allergies and growing list of food intolerances was way more horrifying, as it was ruling my life.
The definition of fasting is to abstain
from all or some kinds of food
or drink for a period of time.
I chose to start with a 3 day water fast, which meant for 3 days I could only consume water (I had Celtic sea salt in some of my water too – Read about the benefits of Celtic sea salt). Then I moved on to a juice fast, consuming only cold pressed juice for 13 days (You can buy the juice from cold pressed juice companies to save you A LOT of time, but we decided to pull out our old trusty cold pressed juicer and make it all ourselves)
We live in a toxic world. Don’t believe me? Do some research on the chemicals in your food, shampoo, toothpaste, moisturizer, deodorant, laundry detergent, dishwashing liquid, air freshener, medications and the list goes on and on and on. Even our fruit and vegetables are often sprayed with pesticides/ herbicides and we don’t even realize!
Over time these toxins build up in our bodies and we never stop to allow our bodies the time to detox and heal, the way they naturally know how to do. Have you ever wondered why when you are sick, you loose your appetite and can’t eat for a few days? This is your bodies’ intuitive way of allowing itself to heal and detox as quick as it can!
Imagine this. A supermarket closes its doors to all customers for a week. But for the entire week all of the staff continue coming to work. Considering there are no customers to be served, the staff have time to clean the things that never get cleaned, to organize the office, file old paperwork, even scrub the walls and ceilings for crying out loud!!! Once they reopen the store, it runs like new!
This is exactly what happens when you give your body a break from food! Almost all of our energy is spent on digesting the foods we eat, But when there is no new food to be digested the body gets to work on healing! – How crazy is that!

We started out very optimistic (Yep I dragged my partner, Jarron along for the ride). And spent the morning outdoors in the sunshine to distract ourselves from eating. But by lunch time we couldn’t keep our mind from food and by late afternoon I think we were each waiting for the other person to throw in the towel so we didn’t feel guilty and could eat something, anything. for dinner. But we stuck it out and went to bed feeling very sorry for ourselves and our grumbling stomachs.
Day 2 the detox symptoms kicked in, in full force! Im talking headaches, body aches, feeling light headed, massive brain fog and yes, VERY HUNGRY. I realized what true hunger felt like on day 2, and its not fun, not fun at all.
We decided to still do our morning walk, although we did take it slower than usual. In the afternoon I was off to work for a 24 hour shift, I thought I would struggle being at work and having to entertain kids, but by some kind of miracle there were no kids for the entire 24 hour shift and I could just sit around feeling sorry for myself. And yes that’s exactly what I did!
Day 3 I woke up at work feeling like I had just had a massive night out with the girls! Im not kidding, it felt exactly like a hangover and my head felt like it was about to explode! I had some body shakes and felt very light headed. This is when the celtic sea salt came in very handy to boost electrolytes and help with the dizziness.
On a more positive note by day 3 I had absolutely zero bloating. I had lost 2kg (Probably just water weight, but I felt very light) AND my eczema was clearing up right before my eyes! I had literally never had it improve so quickly. The redness was gone, it wasn’t itchy and it was starting to heal. In the past it had always taken weeks or even months to get to this stage of healing! So despite the hunger and detox symptoms I was super encouraged to continue with the juice fast and see what else would happen.
The Juice Fast
I won’t go into too much detail on our juice fast. But for the 13 days after the water fast we consumed nothing but cold pressed juice. Juice Fasting works in much the same way as water fasting. Because the juice doesn’t have any fiber the body doesn’t have to work hard to digest it and can spend all of the extra energy on healing!
I will never forget the sweet, delicious, scrumptious taste of the first Juice we made. The juicy organic watermelon, strawberries and lime literally had a party in my mouth! I cant even put into words how delicious it was. I would do it all again just to experience a taste that amazing!
After water fasting it felt very easy to live off juice. We experienced no more detox symptoms and could have juice whenever we felt hungry. Some Juice fasts will limit the amount of juice you can have every day. But we listened to our bodies, drank when we were hungry and stopped when we had enough.
All of the healing benefits we had experienced while water fasting continued while having the juice. My eczema continued to clear up and by the end of the fast It was better than it had been in years, and almost 100% gone from my body – You really had to squint to see it, and it was only because I knew where to look :p But what’s even more important to me is that I wasn’t constantly itchy and irritated by the itch that can never be scratched. And the icing on the cake – I also lost a total of 5kg while fasting, which was a complete bonus as it was not the reason why I decided to fast. And I don’t believe it is a healthy way to loose weight.

- Lost 5kg
- No bloating
- Way less cravings for sugary foods
- I don’t want to eat meat anymore – This was a weird one, and one I didn’t expect! But I am happily living a plant based lifestyle now and don’t desire any meat!
- Improved skin – No pimples!
- More discipline and control around eating and portion sizes.
- Craving lots of fresh fruit and veggies.
Some things to be aware of
The experience of fasting can be different for everyone, so if you are thinking of trying one I would recommend speaking to people who have done one before, join a support group on Facebook (I am a part of Tyler Tolemans juice fast), do your own research and most importantly listen to your body, if you feel like you need to take a break or detox more slowly do it!
When you come off your fast you need to do it slowly so you don’t overload your digestive system! This is SUPER important, as you could undo all of the healing you have done. Read more on breaking a fast.
My Fav Juice Recipe //
1 Whole organic watermelon
1 punnet strawberries
Start with the limes and mint in the cold pressed juicer (juicing the lime and mint first will maximize their flavour throughout the juice) And finish with the strawberries and watermelon. Chill and serve. Or if your like me, drink it straight from the juicer :p
